Discover Expert Tips To Keep Your Garage Door In Top Shape For Longer. Increase Its Lifespan With These Smart Strategies

Oh, the joys of owning a garage door! Opening and closing, protecting your prized possessions, and welcoming you home with open arms. But have you ever stopped to think about how to prolong the lifespan of this unsung hero? Well, my friend, you’re in luck because we’ve got some smart tips to keep your garage door in tip-top shape.

First things first, regular inspections and lubrication are key. Keep those moving parts well-oiled and functioning smoothly, and you’ll be amazed at the difference it makes. And don’t forget about the tracks – keeping them clean and aligned will ensure your door glides effortlessly.

Weatherstripping is another crucial aspect to consider. Test it regularly and replace as needed to keep out the elements and maintain that cozy, snug feeling. Moisture and rust can be the enemy, so take measures to protect against them.

Lastly, don’t underestimate the power of professional maintenance. Scheduling regular visits will give your garage door the TLC it deserves.

So, my friend, by following these smart tips, you’ll be giving your garage door the love it needs to thrive. And in return, it will continue to welcome you home with open arms for years to come.

Key Takeaways

  • Regular inspections and lubrication are essential to extend the lifespan of your garage door.
  • Keeping tracks clean and aligned ensures smooth and safe operation.
  • Testing and replacing weatherstripping helps maintain a tight seal and improve energy efficiency.
  • Applying a protective coating to metal parts and keeping the garage dry and well-ventilated prevents moisture, rust, and corrosion.

Regularly Inspect and Lubricate Moving Parts

Regularly inspect and lubricate the moving parts of your garage door to ensure its longevity. By inspecting hinges and lubricating rollers, you can keep your garage door running smoothly and prevent unnecessary wear and tear.

Start by visually examining the hinges for any signs of damage or rust. If you notice any issues, tighten loose screws or replace damaged hinges promptly.

Next, apply a silicone-based lubricant to the rollers to reduce friction and noise. This will also help prevent the rollers from wearing out prematurely.

By taking these simple steps, you can extend the lifespan of your garage door and avoid costly repairs down the line.

Now, let’s move on to the next section about keeping the tracks clean and aligned, which is equally important for maintaining a functional garage door.

Keep the Tracks Clean and Aligned

To maintain optimal functionality, it is important to keep the tracks of your garage door clean and properly aligned. This not only reduces the risk of accidents but also increases the longevity of your garage door. Here are some smart tips for track maintenance and garage door alignment:

  • Regularly inspect the tracks to ensure they are free from debris, such as leaves or dirt, that can affect the door’s movement.
  • Use a damp cloth to wipe down the tracks and remove any built-up grime or grease.
  • Align the tracks by checking for any gaps or misalignments. Use a level to ensure they are perfectly straight.
  • Tighten any loose bolts or screws that hold the tracks in place to prevent them from shifting.

By keeping the tracks clean and aligned, you create a smooth and safe operation for your garage door.

Now, let’s move on to the next step: testing and replacing weatherstripping.

Test and Replace Weatherstripping

To ensure your weatherstripping is effective in keeping out the elements and maintaining a comfortable temperature inside, it’s important to give it a thorough test. Regularly inspect the seals for any gaps or damage. Look for cracks, tears, or signs of wear and tear. If you notice any issues, promptly repair them to prevent air leakage and energy loss. Replace any damaged weatherstripping with new ones specifically designed for garage doors. This will maintain a tight seal and ensure insulation and protection from outside elements. By regularly inspecting and repairing gaps in the weatherstripping, you can extend the lifespan of your garage door and improve its energy efficiency.

Now, let’s move on to the next section about how to protect against moisture and rust.

Protect Against Moisture and Rust

To protect against moisture and rust, it’s important to apply a protective coating to the metal parts of your garage door. This will help prevent corrosion and extend the lifespan of your door.

Additionally, make sure to keep your garage dry and well-ventilated to minimize the risk of moisture buildup. This will not only protect your garage door but also prevent the growth of mold and mildew.

Apply a Protective Coating to Metal Parts

Extend the lifespan of your garage door by applying a protective coating to the metal parts, keeping them rust-free and increasing their longevity. Did you know that a study found that garage doors with a protective coating lasted an average of 10 years longer than those without? Here are three reasons why using a silicone-based coating for your garage door is beneficial:

  1. Superior Protection: A silicone-based coating forms a barrier on the metal surface, shielding it from moisture, UV rays, and harsh weather conditions. This prevents rust formation and corrosion, ensuring your garage door stays in top condition.

  2. Long-lasting Durability: Silicone-based coatings are known for their exceptional durability. They are resistant to cracking, peeling, and fading, which means your garage door will maintain its protective layer for a longer time.

  3. Easy Application: Choosing the right protective coating for your garage door is crucial. Look for a silicone-based product that is easy to apply, dries quickly, and provides a smooth finish. This will make the process hassle-free and ensure optimal results.

Applying a protective coating to your garage door is just one step towards keeping it in great shape. To further enhance its lifespan, it’s important to keep the garage dry and well-ventilated.

Keep the Garage Dry and Well-Ventilated

Ensure that your garage remains in optimal condition by keeping it dry and well-ventilated. This will allow for improved air circulation and prevent moisture buildup. By preventing condensation and excess moisture, you can extend the lifespan of your garage door. Moisture can cause rust and corrosion, leading to damage and potentially costly repairs.

To keep your garage dry, make sure to fix any leaks or cracks in the walls or roof. Additionally, consider using dehumidifiers to remove excess moisture from the air. These devices are effective in reducing humidity levels and preventing condensation on your garage door.

By maintaining a dry and well-ventilated environment, you’re creating a space that promotes the longevity of your garage door.

Next, let’s discuss the importance of scheduling regular professional maintenance to keep your garage door functioning optimally.

Schedule Regular Professional Maintenance

Don’t forget to give your garage door some tender loving care by scheduling regular professional maintenance. Hiring professionals for garage door maintenance is important to ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your garage door. They have the expertise and knowledge to identify and address any potential issues before they become major problems.

Here are some common signs of garage door wear and tear that professionals can help you with:

  1. Noisy operation or grinding sounds
  2. Slow or jerky movement
  3. Sagging or misaligned tracks
  4. Broken springs or cables

By scheduling regular professional maintenance, you can prevent costly repairs and extend the lifespan of your garage door. Professionals will lubricate moving parts, tighten loose screws, inspect and replace worn-out components, and test the safety features of your garage door.

So, don’t wait until your garage door breaks down completely. Take a proactive approach and give your garage door the care it deserves.

Conclusion

In conclusion, by following these smart tips, you can ensure the longevity of your garage door.

  • Regularly inspect and lubricate moving parts to keep them running smoothly.
  • Keep the tracks clean and aligned, like a well-tuned instrument, for optimal performance.
  • Test and replace weatherstripping to keep out the elements, like a sturdy shield protecting your home.
  • Protect against moisture and rust, like a vigilant guardian defending your garage.
  • Finally, schedule regular professional maintenance to keep your garage door in top shape.

With these measures in place, your garage door will continue to serve you reliably for years to come.

On Oct. 31 my electric gate stopped working and I called Alpha Gate and Door and talked to Lisa. She was great and based on my symptoms said she thought it was the battery and she would send Kealan out the next day. He came and replaced the battery with a 12 v 55ah battery. I asked him to rehang my reflector light on my neighbors new fence so the motion sensor would work. It had worked fine prior to that being taken down. He did that and it worked for a minute and then stopped. He rewired it and it worked once and he left. The next day I noticed the sensor was not working but I didn’t really care because my dog is too small to trigger it. I was charged $448 -$169 for the service call, $249 for the battery and $30 to rewire the sensor. I work exclusively from home as an attorney and never even use the gate during the week. A few weeks later the gate stopped operation completely and I called on Dec. 6. Lisa said she would send Kealan out. He called me and I said the gate would not open at all, the sensor was not working and the sensor was making a nonstop buzzing noise. He arrived fairly late in the day and I saw him pull into my driveway but he did not come to my door and went straight to the gate. I immediately went out there and I saw when he opened the cover that the battery charger lights were not on. He was in a very bad mood and starting ripping the battery out and said I needed a new battery. I said I guess it was because the battery charger wasn’t plugged in. I was not mad about it because that can happen to anyone. He got really mad at that point, I guess because I knew what had happened. He demanded to know whether I had unplugged it, grabbed a huge battery that would not even fit in my unit, then declared the charger had “allegedly” not been plugged in. As he was trying to force the battery in and was slamming everything around, I asked him if he had a smaller battery. He said no, it was whomever installed my gate opener’s fault because the antenna was on the left and they were usually on the right. He continued to try to force it but could not get the cover on. So he gave up and said he would come back Monday with a smaller battery. I assumed the sensor was not working because the battery had died. I heard nothing from anyone the following Monday and had had it so I called Lisa and yelled and told her the way Kealan had behaved and when was the battery actually going to be installed. She said she would talk to Kealan and I said do you have anybody else who is not a jackass who could come instead. She said she would investigate and call me back. She never called me back and apparently the next day around lunch Kealan snuck onto my property, did not tell me he was there, and put in another battery and texted me the gate was now working. I went outside to try it and the remote was not working at all. I have programmed remotes many times (I have done a lot of products liability work and handled cases with complex machinery failures and deposed a lot of engineers so I am not unfamiliar with this type of equipment) and checked it and the receiver was getting the signal from the transmitter but the control board was not opening the gate.So I called Lisa, explained he had come but not told me he was there, and that the remote was not opening the gate. I also apologized for yelling at her the day before because it was not her fault. She said she would tell him. After that call I remembered there is a reset button on the Patriot control board so I went out and pushed it and that caused the remote to work so I called Lisa and said it was working. The new battery is smaller than the one he had originally put in and retails for about $95. The motion sensor still does not work, I have done jumping jacks in front of of it to know avail. I am not bothering to call again about that because Kealan would probably get really mad again. He does NOT like his competence put into question. You decide if $249 is a fair markup on a $95 battery.

I highly recommend Alpha Gate & Door Company! The entire process was incredibly quick and professional! I spoke with Lisa (she’s amazing and extremely knowledgeable) on Tuesday and she came out Wednesday with a recommendation to replace the gate opener that was faulty and couldn’t handle the weight of my gate. I received the reasonable quote the same day and their technician, Keelan, was at my house on Friday of the SAME WEEK to install. Keelan was just as courteous and professional as Lisa and did an amazing job! The install was perfect and pristine! I’ve tried working with other companies and honestly they are hands down the best! If there were 10 stars available, I would give them 10!Thank you Alpha team!
