But it doesn’t stop there. We’ll also discuss the signs that indicate your springs may be damaged or worn-out, as well as the importance of regular maintenance to keep them in top shape.

So join us on this journey to discover everything you need to know about garage door springs. Get ready to become an expert on these humble yet essential components that make your garage door experience complete.

Key Takeaways

  • Garage door springs, whether torsion or extension, are essential for balancing the weight of the door.
  • Springs store energy when the door is closed and release it to counterbalance the weight when opening or closing.
  • Damaged or worn-out springs can lead to difficulty in opening or closing the door, uneven or misaligned doors, and other issues.
  • Regular maintenance and prompt action when encountering spring problems are crucial for ensuring smooth operation and preventing accidents.

Types of Garage Door Springs

Did you know there are two main types of garage door springs that play a crucial role in balancing your garage door?

The first type is called torsion springs, which are installed horizontally above the garage door. Torsion springs use torque to counterbalance the weight of the door, allowing it to open and close smoothly.

The second type is extension springs, which are mounted on either side of the door and stretch when the door is closed. These springs store energy and assist in lifting the door when opening.

However, both types of springs can experience common problems such as rusting, breaking, or losing tension over time. Understanding these issues and ensuring proper garage door spring installation is essential for maintaining a balanced and functional garage door system.

Now let’s explore how these garage door springs work together to support your overhead door mechanism.

##v# How Garage Door Springs Work

Garage door springs work by storing energy when the door is closed and releasing it to counterbalance the weight of the door when opening or closing. This allows the door to effortlessly glide open and closed. Over time, these springs can undergo wear and tear due to constant use, resulting in a limited lifespan of about 7-9 years on average. Common spring problems include rusting, stretching, or breaking, which can cause imbalances and compromise safety. It is important to recognize signs of damaged or worn-out springs to ensure smooth operation and prevent accidents during garage door usage.

Signs of Damaged or Worn-out Springs

If you’re having trouble opening or closing your garage door, it could be a sign of damaged or worn-out springs. These springs play a crucial role in balancing the weight of the door. When they become worn or damaged, it can cause difficulty in operating the door smoothly.

Another indicator of damaged springs is an uneven or misaligned door. In this case, one side may be higher than the other when closed.

Difficulty in Opening or Closing the Door

Struggling to open or close the garage door can be incredibly frustrating. If you’re experiencing difficulty with your garage door, there are a few troubleshooting tips you can try before seeking professional repair services.

First, check if there is any debris or obstructions in the tracks that may be hindering smooth operation. Clearing these out can often solve the problem.

Next, inspect the springs for signs of damage or wear and tear. If they appear worn-out or broken, it’s best to call a professional to replace them as attempting DIY repairs can be dangerous.

Additionally, make sure the tension on the springs is properly adjusted as improper tension can also cause difficulty in opening or closing the door.

By addressing these issues promptly, you can avoid further problems such as an uneven or misaligned door which we will discuss next.

Uneven or Misaligned Door

You step back and notice that your garage door is as crooked as a leaning tower, making it difficult to close properly. This uneven or misaligned door is a clear sign of an issue with the garage door springs.

To rectify this problem, you should consider contacting a professional for garage door maintenance and spring repair.

Here are four reasons why your garage door may be uneven or misaligned:

  1. Worn-out springs: Over time, the springs in your garage door can become worn out, leading to uneven tension and causing the door to become misaligned.

  2. Imbalanced weight distribution: If one spring is stronger than the other, it can result in an imbalanced weight distribution, leading to an uneven or crooked door.

  3. Loose or broken cables: Faulty cables can cause the garage door to operate improperly and result in an uneven closing motion.

  4. Lack of regular maintenance: Neglecting regular maintenance can contribute to various issues with your garage door, including misalignment.

To ensure optimal functionality and prevent further problems, regular maintenance of your garage doors is crucial.

Importance of Regular Maintenance

Regular maintenance is crucial for ensuring the garage door springs stay in perfect harmony, preventing any unexpected disruptions. Hiring a professional for garage door maintenance offers several benefits. They have the expertise to identify and fix any issues before they become major problems.

Common maintenance tasks for garage door springs include lubricating the moving parts, checking the tension, and inspecting for any signs of wear or damage. By regularly maintaining your garage door springs, you can extend their lifespan and avoid costly repairs in the future.

However, it’s important to remember that safety precautions should always be taken when working with garage doors. In the next section about safety precautions and DIY tips, we will discuss how to safely perform simple maintenance tasks on your own.

Safety Precautions and DIY Tips

When it comes to garage door springs, it’s important to avoid DIY spring replacement. This task requires specialized knowledge and tools that most homeowners do not possess. Instead, hire a professional technician who can safely and efficiently handle the job.

Always prioritize safety measures when dealing with springs. Wear protective gear such as gloves and goggles, and make sure to disconnect power to the garage door opener before attempting any repairs or maintenance.

Avoiding DIY Spring Replacement

To ensure your safety and prevent potential accidents, it’s best to leave the replacement of garage door springs to the professionals who have the expertise and specialized tools required. Attempting a DIY spring replacement can be extremely dangerous and should be avoided. Here are some reasons why:

  • Inadequate knowledge: Garage door springs are under high tension, and replacing them without proper training can lead to serious injuries.

  • Lack of specialized tools: Professionals have access to specific equipment needed for safe spring replacement.

  • Potential damage to the door: Incorrectly installed springs can cause damage to the garage door or even render it inoperable.

  • Warranty concerns: DIY repairs may void any existing warranties on your garage door system.

By entrusting professional technicians with your spring replacement, you ensure not only your safety but also the longevity of your garage door system.

Now let’s explore some important safety measures when dealing with springs.

Safety Measures When Dealing with Springs

When it comes to garage door spring maintenance, prioritizing safety measures is crucial. Garage door springs are under high tension and mishandling them can cause serious injury. It is strongly discouraged to attempt DIY spring replacement due to the risks involved. Instead, always hire a professional for spring replacement or repairs. Professionals have the knowledge, experience, and specialized tools to safely handle these components and ensure a secure installation. Remember, your safety should be the top priority when dealing with garage door springs. Leave it in the hands of experts who can guarantee a job well done while keeping you out of harm’s way.

Conclusion

In conclusion, maintaining properly balanced garage door springs is crucial for the safe and efficient operation of your garage door.

Regular maintenance, such as lubricating the springs and inspecting for signs of wear or damage, can help prevent costly repairs and ensure the longevity of your garage door system.

For instance, imagine a scenario where a homeowner neglects spring maintenance resulting in an unbalanced door that suddenly slams shut, causing damage to their vehicle.

This emphasizes the importance of regular upkeep to avoid such accidents and inconvenience.

The service and the work that was done was exceptional. We needed to replace three very old (and very heavy) garage doors in a home that was built in 1960. There were a number of challenges along the way and each one was met professionally and in a timely manner. Lisa was an excellent communicator and highly responsive. Kevin did an extraordinary job with a fairly involved installation. His 'can do' attitude was very refreshing and reassuring. As noted, the final result was terrific. The pricing was VERY reasonable and very fair. The install was completed two days ago and I have already received compliments from the neighbors!

On Oct. 31 my electric gate stopped working and I called Alpha Gate and Door and talked to Lisa. She was great and based on my symptoms said she thought it was the battery and she would send Kealan out the next day. He came and replaced the battery with a 12 v 55ah battery. I asked him to rehang my reflector light on my neighbors new fence so the motion sensor would work. It had worked fine prior to that being taken down. He did that and it worked for a minute and then stopped. He rewired it and it worked once and he left. The next day I noticed the sensor was not working but I didn’t really care because my dog is too small to trigger it. I was charged $448 -$169 for the service call, $249 for the battery and $30 to rewire the sensor. I work exclusively from home as an attorney and never even use the gate during the week. A few weeks later the gate stopped operation completely and I called on Dec. 6. Lisa said she would send Kealan out. He called me and I said the gate would not open at all, the sensor was not working and the sensor was making a nonstop buzzing noise. He arrived fairly late in the day and I saw him pull into my driveway but he did not come to my door and went straight to the gate. I immediately went out there and I saw when he opened the cover that the battery charger lights were not on. He was in a very bad mood and starting ripping the battery out and said I needed a new battery. I said I guess it was because the battery charger wasn’t plugged in. I was not mad about it because that can happen to anyone. He got really mad at that point, I guess because I knew what had happened. He demanded to know whether I had unplugged it, grabbed a huge battery that would not even fit in my unit, then declared the charger had “allegedly” not been plugged in. As he was trying to force the battery in and was slamming everything around, I asked him if he had a smaller battery. He said no, it was whomever installed my gate opener’s fault because the antenna was on the left and they were usually on the right. He continued to try to force it but could not get the cover on. So he gave up and said he would come back Monday with a smaller battery. I assumed the sensor was not working because the battery had died. I heard nothing from anyone the following Monday and had had it so I called Lisa and yelled and told her the way Kealan had behaved and when was the battery actually going to be installed. She said she would talk to Kealan and I said do you have anybody else who is not a jackass who could come instead. She said she would investigate and call me back. She never called me back and apparently the next day around lunch Kealan snuck onto my property, did not tell me he was there, and put in another battery and texted me the gate was now working. I went outside to try it and the remote was not working at all. I have programmed remotes many times (I have done a lot of products liability work and handled cases with complex machinery failures and deposed a lot of engineers so I am not unfamiliar with this type of equipment) and checked it and the receiver was getting the signal from the transmitter but the control board was not opening the gate.So I called Lisa, explained he had come but not told me he was there, and that the remote was not opening the gate. I also apologized for yelling at her the day before because it was not her fault. She said she would tell him. After that call I remembered there is a reset button on the Patriot control board so I went out and pushed it and that caused the remote to work so I called Lisa and said it was working. The new battery is smaller than the one he had originally put in and retails for about $95. The motion sensor still does not work, I have done jumping jacks in front of of it to know avail. I am not bothering to call again about that because Kealan would probably get really mad again. He does NOT like his competence put into question. You decide if $249 is a fair markup on a $95 battery.
