Key Takeaways

  • Garage door screens provide a variety of benefits, including allowing fresh air in while keeping bugs and debris out, increasing the value of your home, providing an extra layer of protection against intruders, minimizing dust and preventing leaves from entering, and offering a variety of styles and designs to complement your home’s aesthetics.
  • The installation process for garage door screens involves accurately measuring your garage door opening, choosing the right type of screen (retractable or fixed), following installation instructions carefully, ensuring a proper fit for the screen and frame, and troubleshooting any issues that may arise.
  • Properly measuring your garage door opening is important to avoid costly mistakes. This involves measuring the width at the top, middle, and bottom, recording the smallest measurement as the actual width, measuring the height at the left side, center, and right side, and recording the smallest measurement for accurate results.
  • When choosing the right type of screen, consider the materials used (fiberglass, polyester, aluminum), visibility, airflow, durability, climate, frequency of use, and maintenance requirements for each type. Choose a suitable screen type that meets your needs.

Assess the Benefits of Garage Door Screens

Garage door screens offer several benefits for your home. They provide convenience and peace of mind by allowing fresh air to flow in while keeping bugs and debris out. This cost-effective solution can also increase the value of your home. Additionally, garage door screens offer an extra layer of protection against intruders, making your family feel safe and secure. They help create a comfortable environment by minimizing dust and preventing leaves from blowing into your garage. With a variety of styles and designs available, it’s easy to find one that complements the overall aesthetics of your home. Now that you understand the benefits, let’s move on to understanding the installation process.

Understand the Installation Process

To successfully install a garage door screen, you need to start by measuring your garage door opening accurately. This will help you determine the right size of screen and frame that you need.

Once you have the measurements, choose the right type of screen that suits your needs, whether it’s retractable or fixed.

Finally, follow the installation instructions carefully to properly install the screen and frame for a functional and efficient garage door screen system.

Measure Your Garage Door Opening

Before tackling the installation or repair of your garage door screens, it’s essential to accurately measure the width and height of your garage door opening to ensure a proper fit.

Did you know that a study found that around 70% of homeowners incorrectly measure their garage door openings? To avoid being part of this statistic, let’s go over some measuring techniques.

Start by measuring the width from side to side at three different points: top, middle, and bottom. Take note of the smallest measurement as this will be your actual width.

Next, measure the height from floor to header at three locations: left side, center, and right side. Again, record the smallest measurement for accurate results.

By properly measuring your garage door opening, you can select appropriate materials and avoid any costly mistakes.

Now let’s transition into choosing the right type of screen for your needs.

Choose the Right Type of Screen

Once you’ve accurately measured your garage door opening, it’s time to consider which type of screen will best meet your specific needs.

When choosing the right type of screen, it’s important to think about the materials used and the maintenance required. There are various screen materials available, such as fiberglass, polyester, and aluminum.

Fiberglass screens are popular for their durability and resistance to corrosion, while polyester screens offer better visibility and airflow. Aluminum screens provide excellent strength but may dent easily. Consider the climate in your area and how often you plan to use the screen when deciding on a material.

Additionally, think about the maintenance involved with each type of screen. Some screens require regular cleaning or repairs to keep them in good condition.

Now that you have chosen a suitable screen type, let’s move on to installing the screen and frame without delay.

Install the Screen and Frame

Now that you’ve chosen the perfect screen type, let’s dive into how to install it and the frame for a seamless and stylish addition to your garage.

Fun fact: Did you know that installing screens can increase airflow in your garage by up to 40%? Here are some screen installation tips to help you get started:

  1. Begin by measuring the dimensions of your garage door opening to ensure a proper fit.
  2. Attach the frame using screws or adhesive, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
  3. Carefully position the screen material within the frame, making sure it is taut and wrinkle-free.

To maintain your frame’s longevity, consider these maintenance guidelines:

  1. Regularly clean the frame with mild soap and water to remove dirt and debris.
  2. Inspect for any damage or loose components, repairing or replacing as necessary.
  3. Lubricate hinges and moving parts annually to ensure smooth operation.

With your screen installed and frame well-maintained, you’ll be ready to enjoy a functional and inviting garage space.

In the next section, we’ll troubleshoot common issues that may arise during this process without skipping a beat.

Troubleshoot Common Issues

If your garage door screen is not functioning properly, you may need to troubleshoot common issues.

Start by checking for any obstructions that may be preventing the screen from opening or closing smoothly. Clear away debris and make sure the tracks are clean and free of dirt or grease.

If the screen is still not working, inspect the springs and cables for any signs of damage or wear. Tighten any loose screws or bolts that may be causing the issue. If necessary, replace damaged parts with new ones to ensure proper functionality.

By troubleshooting these common problems and identifying repair solutions, you can quickly get your garage door screen back in working order.

Transitioning into repairing garage door screens, it’s important to follow a step-by-step process to ensure a successful repair.

Repairing Garage Door Screens

To restore the functionality of your garage door screen, you’ll need to go through a step-by-step process and address any issues that may arise.

Start by inspecting the screen for any tears or damage. If you find any, patch them up using a repair kit specifically designed for garage door screens.

Make sure to clean the screen thoroughly using mild soap and water to remove dirt and debris.

Lubricate the tracks and hinges with silicone spray or lubricant to ensure smooth operation.

Check the springs for tension and adjust if necessary.

Additionally, tighten any loose screws or bolts that may be causing problems.

Regular garage door screen maintenance is essential to keep it in good working condition.

By following these DIY garage screen repairs, you can enjoy the benefits of a bug-free and functional garage without hassle or inconvenience.

On Oct. 31 my electric gate stopped working and I called Alpha Gate and Door and talked to Lisa. She was great and based on my symptoms said she thought it was the battery and she would send Kealan out the next day. He came and replaced the battery with a 12 v 55ah battery. I asked him to rehang my reflector light on my neighbors new fence so the motion sensor would work. It had worked fine prior to that being taken down. He did that and it worked for a minute and then stopped. He rewired it and it worked once and he left. The next day I noticed the sensor was not working but I didn’t really care because my dog is too small to trigger it. I was charged $448 -$169 for the service call, $249 for the battery and $30 to rewire the sensor. I work exclusively from home as an attorney and never even use the gate during the week. A few weeks later the gate stopped operation completely and I called on Dec. 6. Lisa said she would send Kealan out. He called me and I said the gate would not open at all, the sensor was not working and the sensor was making a nonstop buzzing noise. He arrived fairly late in the day and I saw him pull into my driveway but he did not come to my door and went straight to the gate. I immediately went out there and I saw when he opened the cover that the battery charger lights were not on. He was in a very bad mood and starting ripping the battery out and said I needed a new battery. I said I guess it was because the battery charger wasn’t plugged in. I was not mad about it because that can happen to anyone. He got really mad at that point, I guess because I knew what had happened. He demanded to know whether I had unplugged it, grabbed a huge battery that would not even fit in my unit, then declared the charger had “allegedly” not been plugged in. As he was trying to force the battery in and was slamming everything around, I asked him if he had a smaller battery. He said no, it was whomever installed my gate opener’s fault because the antenna was on the left and they were usually on the right. He continued to try to force it but could not get the cover on. So he gave up and said he would come back Monday with a smaller battery. I assumed the sensor was not working because the battery had died. I heard nothing from anyone the following Monday and had had it so I called Lisa and yelled and told her the way Kealan had behaved and when was the battery actually going to be installed. She said she would talk to Kealan and I said do you have anybody else who is not a jackass who could come instead. She said she would investigate and call me back. She never called me back and apparently the next day around lunch Kealan snuck onto my property, did not tell me he was there, and put in another battery and texted me the gate was now working. I went outside to try it and the remote was not working at all. I have programmed remotes many times (I have done a lot of products liability work and handled cases with complex machinery failures and deposed a lot of engineers so I am not unfamiliar with this type of equipment) and checked it and the receiver was getting the signal from the transmitter but the control board was not opening the gate.So I called Lisa, explained he had come but not told me he was there, and that the remote was not opening the gate. I also apologized for yelling at her the day before because it was not her fault. She said she would tell him. After that call I remembered there is a reset button on the Patriot control board so I went out and pushed it and that caused the remote to work so I called Lisa and said it was working. The new battery is smaller than the one he had originally put in and retails for about $95. The motion sensor still does not work, I have done jumping jacks in front of of it to know avail. I am not bothering to call again about that because Kealan would probably get really mad again. He does NOT like his competence put into question. You decide if $249 is a fair markup on a $95 battery.

I highly recommend Alpha Gate & Door Company! The entire process was incredibly quick and professional! I spoke with Lisa (she’s amazing and extremely knowledgeable) on Tuesday and she came out Wednesday with a recommendation to replace the gate opener that was faulty and couldn’t handle the weight of my gate. I received the reasonable quote the same day and their technician, Keelan, was at my house on Friday of the SAME WEEK to install. Keelan was just as courteous and professional as Lisa and did an amazing job! The install was perfect and pristine! I’ve tried working with other companies and honestly they are hands down the best! If there were 10 stars available, I would give them 10!Thank you Alpha team!
