Key Takeaways

  • Assess the condition of your garage door seal for signs of wear and tear, drafts, and water seepage when the door is closed.
  • Choose the perfect replacement seal based on factors such as durability, weather resistance, flexibility, and ease of installation.
  • Properly remove the old seal by using a pry bar or screwdriver, cleaning the area, and removing any remaining pieces.
  • Install the new seal by measuring the length of your garage door, pressing it firmly into place, and following the manufacturer’s instructions. Regularly test and maintain the seal to ensure functionality and energy efficiency.

Assess the Condition of Your Garage Door Seal

Before you dive into replacing your garage door seal, take a moment to assess if it’s time for an upgrade. Assessing the condition of your seal is crucial in determining if it needs replacing. Look for signs of wear and tear, such as cracks, gaps, or brittleness. If you notice any damage or deterioration, it’s a clear indication that a replacement is necessary.

Additionally, check for drafts entering your garage when the door is closed or water seeping in during rainy days. These are signs that your seal isn’t functioning properly and should be replaced promptly.

By thoroughly evaluating the condition of your seal, you can ensure that you choose the right replacement to protect your garage from external elements and maintain its insulation capabilities.

Choose the Right Replacement Seal

To ensure a successful seal replacement, it is important to choose the right replacement for your needs. When selecting a new garage door seal, consider the different options available. The two most common types are rubber seals and vinyl seals, each with their own advantages. Rubber seals are known for their durability and ability to withstand various weather conditions. On the other hand, vinyl seals offer flexibility and are easy to install. When making your decision, take into account the climate in your area and the specific requirements of your garage door.

Once you have chosen the appropriate replacement seal, proper installation is crucial for optimal performance. It is important to carefully follow the manufacturer’s instructions and take your time during the installation process. Ensuring a tight fit along the bottom of your garage door is essential to prevent drafts, debris, and pests from entering your garage space.

Now that you have selected the right replacement seal and understand the importance of proper installation, let’s move on to the next step: removing the old seal…

Remove the Old Seal

To remove the old seal, you’ll need to use a pry bar or screwdriver. Carefully insert the tool under the seal and gently pry it away from the door.

Make sure to clean the area where the seal was attached, removing any debris or adhesive residue.

By following these steps, you can ensure a smooth and successful garage door seal replacement.

Use a pry bar or screwdriver to carefully remove the old seal

To carefully remove the old seal, use a pry bar or screwdriver. Take your time and avoid damaging the surrounding area. Here are some tips for removing stubborn old seals:

  • Start by loosening any screws or nails holding the seal in place.
  • Gently pry the seal away from the door using the pry bar or screwdriver.
  • If necessary, use a utility knife to cut through any adhesive holding the seal.
  • Be cautious not to scratch or dent the garage door while removing the old seal.
  • Inspect the area for any remaining pieces of the old seal and remove them.

Now that you have successfully removed the old seal, it’s time to clean the area where it was attached.

Clean the area where the seal was attached

Now that you’ve successfully removed the old seal, let’s get to work cleaning the area where it was attached.

Cleaning this area is crucial for ensuring a proper installation of the new garage door seal. Start by using a mild detergent and water solution to remove any dirt, grime, or debris from the surface. You can also use a sponge or soft brush to gently scrub away stubborn stains.

After cleaning, make sure to rinse the area thoroughly with water and allow it to dry completely before proceeding with the next step.

A clean surface is essential because it allows the new seal to adhere properly and provides a smooth and even contact point for optimal sealing performance.

Once you’re satisfied with the cleanliness of the area, you’re ready to move on to installing the new seal.

Install the New Seal

Once you’ve removed the old seal, it’s time to install the new one and give your garage door a fresh, tight seal. Garage door seal installation is an important step in maintaining the functionality and energy efficiency of your garage.

To ensure a successful installation, avoid some common mistakes in seal replacement. First, make sure to measure the length of your garage door before purchasing a new seal to ensure a proper fit.

Next, start at one end of the door and attach the seal by pressing it firmly into place along the bottom edge. Be sure to follow any specific instructions provided by the manufacturer for your particular type of seal.

Finally, test and maintain the new seal regularly to ensure its effectiveness in keeping out drafts and moisture. Transitioning into the next section about ‘test and maintain the new seal,’ remember that regular maintenance will help prolong its lifespan and keep your garage protected from unwanted elements.

Test and Maintain the New Seal

To ensure the effectiveness of your new garage door seal, close the door and carefully inspect for any gaps or leaks. These can compromise the seal’s ability to keep out drafts and pests.

Regularly cleaning and inspecting the seal will also help maintain its longevity and performance. By following these steps, you can ensure that your garage remains well-insulated and protected from outside elements.

Close the garage door and check for any gaps or leaks

Close the garage door and check for any gaps or leaks. Ensuring a tight seal is crucial for maintaining your garage’s temperature and protecting it from the elements.

Start by inspecting the bottom of the door, where most gaps occur. Look for any cracks, holes, or worn-out areas in the seal. If you notice any issues, it’s time to replace it using weatherproofing techniques like adhesive strips or threshold seals. Remember to measure accurately before purchasing a new seal to ensure a proper fit.

Regularly inspect and clean the seal to ensure its effectiveness and prevent dirt buildup, which can compromise its performance over time.

With these tips in mind, you can keep your garage well-insulated and protected from external factors that might damage your belongings without compromising on style or functionality as Eugene Schwartz would suggest.

Now let’s move on to regularly inspecting and cleaning the seal to ensure its effectiveness.

Regularly inspect and clean the seal to ensure its effectiveness

Regularly inspect and clean the seal to ensure its effectiveness and maintain a well-insulated garage. Here are some tips to help you with inspecting and replacing the seal:

  1. Check for any visible damage or wear on the seal. Look for cracks, tears, or gaps that may compromise its effectiveness.

  2. Use a mild detergent mixed with water to clean the seal. Gently scrub it with a soft brush or sponge to remove dirt, debris, and any buildup that can affect its performance.

  3. Inspect the seal for mold or mildew growth. If you notice any, use a mixture of bleach and water to clean it thoroughly.

  4. If your seal is beyond repair or shows signs of significant wear, consider replacing it with a new one. Measure the length of your garage door before purchasing a replacement seal to ensure proper fit.

By regularly inspecting and cleaning your garage door seal, you can prolong its lifespan and ensure that your garage remains well-insulated from outside elements like dust, pests, drafts, and moisture.

Conclusion

Congratulations on successfully replacing your garage door seal! By following these tips and instructions, you’ve not only improved the condition of your garage but also increased its energy efficiency.

Just like how a well-sealed container keeps its contents fresh and protected, your new garage door seal will keep out unwanted elements such as dust, pests, and drafts.

Remember to regularly test and maintain the seal to ensure it continues to do its job effectively.

Happy sealing!

On Oct. 31 my electric gate stopped working and I called Alpha Gate and Door and talked to Lisa. She was great and based on my symptoms said she thought it was the battery and she would send Kealan out the next day. He came and replaced the battery with a 12 v 55ah battery. I asked him to rehang my reflector light on my neighbors new fence so the motion sensor would work. It had worked fine prior to that being taken down. He did that and it worked for a minute and then stopped. He rewired it and it worked once and he left. The next day I noticed the sensor was not working but I didn’t really care because my dog is too small to trigger it. I was charged $448 -$169 for the service call, $249 for the battery and $30 to rewire the sensor. I work exclusively from home as an attorney and never even use the gate during the week. A few weeks later the gate stopped operation completely and I called on Dec. 6. Lisa said she would send Kealan out. He called me and I said the gate would not open at all, the sensor was not working and the sensor was making a nonstop buzzing noise. He arrived fairly late in the day and I saw him pull into my driveway but he did not come to my door and went straight to the gate. I immediately went out there and I saw when he opened the cover that the battery charger lights were not on. He was in a very bad mood and starting ripping the battery out and said I needed a new battery. I said I guess it was because the battery charger wasn’t plugged in. I was not mad about it because that can happen to anyone. He got really mad at that point, I guess because I knew what had happened. He demanded to know whether I had unplugged it, grabbed a huge battery that would not even fit in my unit, then declared the charger had “allegedly” not been plugged in. As he was trying to force the battery in and was slamming everything around, I asked him if he had a smaller battery. He said no, it was whomever installed my gate opener’s fault because the antenna was on the left and they were usually on the right. He continued to try to force it but could not get the cover on. So he gave up and said he would come back Monday with a smaller battery. I assumed the sensor was not working because the battery had died. I heard nothing from anyone the following Monday and had had it so I called Lisa and yelled and told her the way Kealan had behaved and when was the battery actually going to be installed. She said she would talk to Kealan and I said do you have anybody else who is not a jackass who could come instead. She said she would investigate and call me back. She never called me back and apparently the next day around lunch Kealan snuck onto my property, did not tell me he was there, and put in another battery and texted me the gate was now working. I went outside to try it and the remote was not working at all. I have programmed remotes many times (I have done a lot of products liability work and handled cases with complex machinery failures and deposed a lot of engineers so I am not unfamiliar with this type of equipment) and checked it and the receiver was getting the signal from the transmitter but the control board was not opening the gate.So I called Lisa, explained he had come but not told me he was there, and that the remote was not opening the gate. I also apologized for yelling at her the day before because it was not her fault. She said she would tell him. After that call I remembered there is a reset button on the Patriot control board so I went out and pushed it and that caused the remote to work so I called Lisa and said it was working. The new battery is smaller than the one he had originally put in and retails for about $95. The motion sensor still does not work, I have done jumping jacks in front of of it to know avail. I am not bothering to call again about that because Kealan would probably get really mad again. He does NOT like his competence put into question. You decide if $249 is a fair markup on a $95 battery.

I highly recommend Alpha Gate & Door Company! The entire process was incredibly quick and professional! I spoke with Lisa (she’s amazing and extremely knowledgeable) on Tuesday and she came out Wednesday with a recommendation to replace the gate opener that was faulty and couldn’t handle the weight of my gate. I received the reasonable quote the same day and their technician, Keelan, was at my house on Friday of the SAME WEEK to install. Keelan was just as courteous and professional as Lisa and did an amazing job! The install was perfect and pristine! I’ve tried working with other companies and honestly they are hands down the best! If there were 10 stars available, I would give them 10!Thank you Alpha team!
