This article delves into the key components that make up a commercial garage door. By examining the springs, tracks and rollers, motor and drive system, panels and insulation, as well as safety features, we aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of the intricate mechanisms that ensure the functionality and security of these doors.

This knowledge will empower business owners and operators to make informed decisions regarding the maintenance and selection of commercial garage doors.

Key Takeaways

  • Torsion springs and extension springs are two main types of garage door springs.
  • Regular maintenance is important to prevent spring breakage and ensure proper functioning.
  • Tracks guide the movement of the garage door, while rollers allow it to slide along the tracks.
  • Regularly inspect tracks and rollers for damage or wear.

Springs

Springs are essential components of a commercial garage door system. They play a crucial role in the smooth operation and overall functionality of the garage door. There are two main types of garage door springs: torsion springs and extension springs. Torsion springs are typically mounted above the garage door and use torque to lift the door. Extension springs, on the other hand, are mounted on either side of the door and stretch to provide the necessary force for lifting.

Regular maintenance of garage door springs is of utmost importance. Over time, springs can wear out or become damaged due to constant use and exposure to the elements. Without proper maintenance, these springs can break, leading to a malfunctioning garage door that may pose a safety risk. Regular inspection and lubrication can help identify any potential issues and prevent them from escalating.

In conclusion, the types of garage door springs, including torsion springs and extension springs, are vital components of a commercial garage door system. Regular maintenance is essential to ensure their proper functioning and prevent potential safety hazards. By taking care of these springs, businesses can maintain the smooth operation of their garage doors, providing a sense of security and belonging for both employees and customers.

Moving on to the next section, tracks and rollers are another crucial aspect of a commercial garage door system.

Tracks and Rollers

The proper functioning of tracks and rollers is crucial for the smooth operation of the mechanism. The tracks guide the movement of the garage door while the rollers allow it to slide along the tracks. Here are some maintenance tips to ensure the optimal performance of tracks and rollers:

  • Regularly inspect the tracks and rollers for any signs of damage or wear.
  • Clean the tracks and rollers to remove any dirt or debris that may hinder their movement.
  • Lubricate the tracks and rollers with a silicone-based lubricant to reduce friction and promote smooth operation.

Choosing the right track and roller system is also important for the longevity and efficiency of a commercial garage door. Consider the following factors when selecting a track and roller system:

  • Durability: Opt for tracks and rollers made from high-quality materials that can withstand heavy usage.
  • Size and compatibility: Ensure that the track and roller system is suitable for the size and weight of the garage door.
  • Noise reduction: Look for tracks and rollers that are designed to minimize noise during operation.

By following these maintenance tips and selecting the appropriate track and roller system, you can ensure the reliable and efficient functioning of your commercial garage door.

Transitioning into the subsequent section about the motor and drive system, it is important to understand how these components work together to provide automated operation for the garage door.

Motor and Drive System

Proper functioning of the motor and drive system is essential for the automated operation of the garage door mechanism. The motor is responsible for generating the power needed to operate the door, while the drive system transfers this power to the door components. Maintaining motor efficiency and drive system maintenance are crucial for the overall performance and longevity of the garage door.

To ensure motor efficiency, regular inspections and maintenance should be conducted. This includes checking for any signs of wear or damage, lubricating moving parts, and cleaning the motor to prevent dust build-up. Regular maintenance not only improves motor efficiency but also reduces the risk of motor failure, which can lead to costly repairs and downtime.

Similarly, drive system maintenance is essential for the smooth operation of the garage door. This involves inspecting and lubricating the drive chain or belt, checking for any loose or damaged components, and ensuring proper tension of the drive system. Neglecting drive system maintenance can result in increased friction, decreased efficiency, and ultimately, premature wear of the drive components.

In conclusion, maintaining motor efficiency and drive system maintenance are vital for the reliable and efficient operation of the garage door. Regular inspections and maintenance help identify and address any issues before they escalate, ensuring the longevity and optimal performance of the motor and drive system.

Moving forward, let us now explore the next section on panels and insulation.

Panels and Insulation

Insulation plays a crucial role in regulating temperature and reducing energy loss in the garage door system. The choice of panel materials and insulation options is essential to achieve optimal thermal performance and energy efficiency. Panel materials for commercial garage doors are typically made of steel, aluminum, or fiberglass. Steel panels offer durability and strength, making them suitable for heavy-duty applications. Aluminum panels are lightweight and corrosion-resistant, making them ideal for coastal areas. Fiberglass panels provide excellent insulation properties and are resistant to denting and cracking.

When it comes to insulation options, there are various choices available. Polystyrene and polyurethane are commonly used materials for garage door insulation. Polystyrene insulation boards are lightweight and offer good thermal resistance. Polyurethane insulation, on the other hand, provides superior insulation performance due to its higher R-value. It also enhances the structural integrity of the door panels.

Proper insulation in garage doors helps maintain a comfortable environment inside the building, reduces energy consumption, and lowers heating and cooling costs. It also enhances the overall durability and lifespan of the door. By choosing the appropriate panel materials and insulation options, commercial garage doors can effectively contribute to energy conservation and provide a sense of belonging to a sustainable and eco-friendly community.

Transitioning to the subsequent section on safety features, it is important to consider the various mechanisms and technologies incorporated in commercial garage doors to ensure the safety and security of the users.

Safety Features

Transitioning to the subsequent section on safety features, it is important to consider the various mechanisms and technologies incorporated in commercial garage doors to ensure the safety and security of the users.

Safety sensors are one of the primary components that contribute to the safe operation of commercial garage doors. These sensors use infrared or laser technology to detect any obstructions in the door’s path. When an object is detected, the sensors send a signal to the door opener, causing it to reverse its direction and prevent any potential accidents or damages.

In addition to safety sensors, commercial garage doors are equipped with emergency release mechanisms. These mechanisms allow for manual operation of the door in case of power outages or other emergencies. By pulling the emergency release cord, the door can be disengaged from the automatic opener and opened or closed manually. This feature ensures that users can still access or secure the garage even in situations where the automated system is not functional.

Overall, the incorporation of safety sensors and emergency release mechanisms in commercial garage doors is crucial for the protection of users and their belongings. These features provide an added layer of security and prevent accidents or injuries that may occur during the operation of the door. Consequently, commercial garage doors with such safety features offer peace of mind to users, knowing that their well-being and property are safeguarded.

The service and the work that was done was exceptional. We needed to replace three very old (and very heavy) garage doors in a home that was built in 1960. There were a number of challenges along the way and each one was met professionally and in a timely manner. Lisa was an excellent communicator and highly responsive. Kevin did an extraordinary job with a fairly involved installation. His 'can do' attitude was very refreshing and reassuring. As noted, the final result was terrific. The pricing was VERY reasonable and very fair. The install was completed two days ago and I have already received compliments from the neighbors!

On Oct. 31 my electric gate stopped working and I called Alpha Gate and Door and talked to Lisa. She was great and based on my symptoms said she thought it was the battery and she would send Kealan out the next day. He came and replaced the battery with a 12 v 55ah battery. I asked him to rehang my reflector light on my neighbors new fence so the motion sensor would work. It had worked fine prior to that being taken down. He did that and it worked for a minute and then stopped. He rewired it and it worked once and he left. The next day I noticed the sensor was not working but I didn’t really care because my dog is too small to trigger it. I was charged $448 -$169 for the service call, $249 for the battery and $30 to rewire the sensor. I work exclusively from home as an attorney and never even use the gate during the week. A few weeks later the gate stopped operation completely and I called on Dec. 6. Lisa said she would send Kealan out. He called me and I said the gate would not open at all, the sensor was not working and the sensor was making a nonstop buzzing noise. He arrived fairly late in the day and I saw him pull into my driveway but he did not come to my door and went straight to the gate. I immediately went out there and I saw when he opened the cover that the battery charger lights were not on. He was in a very bad mood and starting ripping the battery out and said I needed a new battery. I said I guess it was because the battery charger wasn’t plugged in. I was not mad about it because that can happen to anyone. He got really mad at that point, I guess because I knew what had happened. He demanded to know whether I had unplugged it, grabbed a huge battery that would not even fit in my unit, then declared the charger had “allegedly” not been plugged in. As he was trying to force the battery in and was slamming everything around, I asked him if he had a smaller battery. He said no, it was whomever installed my gate opener’s fault because the antenna was on the left and they were usually on the right. He continued to try to force it but could not get the cover on. So he gave up and said he would come back Monday with a smaller battery. I assumed the sensor was not working because the battery had died. I heard nothing from anyone the following Monday and had had it so I called Lisa and yelled and told her the way Kealan had behaved and when was the battery actually going to be installed. She said she would talk to Kealan and I said do you have anybody else who is not a jackass who could come instead. She said she would investigate and call me back. She never called me back and apparently the next day around lunch Kealan snuck onto my property, did not tell me he was there, and put in another battery and texted me the gate was now working. I went outside to try it and the remote was not working at all. I have programmed remotes many times (I have done a lot of products liability work and handled cases with complex machinery failures and deposed a lot of engineers so I am not unfamiliar with this type of equipment) and checked it and the receiver was getting the signal from the transmitter but the control board was not opening the gate.So I called Lisa, explained he had come but not told me he was there, and that the remote was not opening the gate. I also apologized for yelling at her the day before because it was not her fault. She said she would tell him. After that call I remembered there is a reset button on the Patriot control board so I went out and pushed it and that caused the remote to work so I called Lisa and said it was working. The new battery is smaller than the one he had originally put in and retails for about $95. The motion sensor still does not work, I have done jumping jacks in front of of it to know avail. I am not bothering to call again about that because Kealan would probably get really mad again. He does NOT like his competence put into question. You decide if $249 is a fair markup on a $95 battery.
